Jim Underhill, IT Operations Services Manager, HP Bulmers
Since 1991 Bulmers' IT strategy has been to move away from its proprietary MV40, with its INFOS database management system, to an open systems DG AViiON and Oracle. But two of its key COBOL applications, the Fruit Procurement System and Profit Share System, remained on the MV because they used many INFOS specific functions that were difficult to re-develop.
The largest cider company in the world, Bulmers, has now switched off the last of its legacy applications with the help of migration specialists Transoft. As part of a £10m (US$16m) investment over five years, Transoft software was used to move the last proprietary COBOL applications - fruit procurement and profit share - to Unix-based Micro Focus COBOL. The cider company expects to see hardware costs reduced by around £25,000 (US$40,000) annually, and because the Transoft deal cost the same figure, the investment will pay for itself within a year.
