Bertrand Petit, Project Leader, Skyguide
When Swiss air traffic control company Skyguide was confronted with end-of-life for the hardware that supported its critical business applications, it turned to application migration expert Transoft to migrate its legacy applications to a Windows environment with no disruption to service.
Skyguide is responsible for ensuring the safety of air traffic in Switzerland’s airspace. Safety is the overriding principle for the 1,400 staff in a field which demands high expertise, strong commitment and flexibility to provide safe, efficient and customer-friendly services round the clock.
Computer systems play a key part in air traffic control services. Skyguide’s 30-strong IT team had run Eclipse/MV computers from Data General for many years but realised it would be increasingly difficult to source both spares and expertise for these ageing machines. Skyguide considered using emulators but saw little future in this option, and thought about redeveloping but ruled this out as too costly and risky. Instead Skyguide turned to Transoft on the recommendation of EMC to carry out their migration.
