Steel
Warehouse Selects Transoft to Migrate Mission Critical
HP e3000 Applications
to UNIX
October14 , 2002 - Transoft, a leading application
transformation and integration company, announced today
an agreement with Steel Warehouse Company, Inc., an
integrated steel service centre headquartered in South
Bend, Ind., to migrate its core business applications
from an HP e3000 system to a new UNIX platform.
Transoft will also migrate the applications used by
Lock Joint Tube Inc., an affiliate company.
After Hewlett-Packard announced it was discontinuing
its HP e3000 platform last November, the management of
Steel Warehouse and Lock Joint Tube realised they were
sitting on a time bomb. Both companies’ business
applications, tuned over many years to meet their business
needs, were running on HP e3000 hardware. They were faced
with replacing these mission critical applications just
to solve a hardware problem.
“We looked for replacement packages and even considered
re-writing”, commented Ted Lerman, Steel Warehouse
chief financial officer. “Both of these options
looked expensive and there was no guarantee we would
end up with something that did the job as well as our
current systems. What we needed was a way of moving our
existing applications to a new platform – we required
a migration”.
Steel Warehouse spent several months evaluating migration
options; the company evaluated several offerings before
selecting the Transoft solution. “Transoft was
the only firm that offered a complete package”,
said David Samber, Steel Warehouse’s MIS director. “Other
migrations seemed to be based on just emulating the HP
3000 environment on a new platform. With Transoft, we
are getting a port to the native UNIX and RDBMS environment,
which means we won’t be left in another dead-end,” he
explained.
Paul Holland, chief executive officer of Transoft, commented: “Steel
Warehouse did an extensive and thorough job of evaluating
all their options. Their decision to choose Transoft
to undertake this project further illustrates that our
HP 3000 migration tools and services provide customers
with a credible and strategic solution to a difficult
problem.”
