Skyguide
of Switzerland selects Transoft to migrate mission
critical air traffic control applications
June 25, 2003 – Transoft, a
leader in enabling companies to evolve new IT solutions from
their existing applications, today announced it has won a
major migration project with Skyguide which is responsible
for ensuring the safety of air traffic in Switzerland's airspace.
Transoft will migrate Skyguide's core business applications
- written in a complex mix of ADA, Fortran 77, C and Assembler
- from a Data General
(DG) MV to a modern Windows NT environment.
Joël Jordan, Head of Data Processing Division at
Skyguide comments: "The reliability and sustained
accessibility of our system is obviously vital for what
we do. This migration project with Transoft will remove
any future risk associated with the hardware, and maintain
the high level of safety our industry demands."
Transoft's migration will enable Skyguide to transfer
its applications to the Windows NT platform. This will
save huge redevelopment costs, preserve the knowledge
and skills of current IT staff, and guarantee the essential
high availability and security of the system.
It is expected that, despite the high level of testing
required for this type of application, the migration
work will only take a little over one year, with implementation
in 2004.
Skyguide has been tuning its software, running on DG
MV machines in Geneva and Zurich, over a period of many
years to meet its demanding requirements. Data General
(now part of EMC2) ceased selling MVs several years ago,
and Skyguide's migration anticipates that it will be
increasingly difficult to source spares and expertise
for this legacy platform.
About Skyguide
Skyguide is responsible for ensuring the safety of air
traffic in Switzerland's airspace, on behalf of the
Swiss Confederation. Safety is the overriding principle
in all air traffic control operations, plus providing
quality air traffic services for all its customers.
The company's 1,400 personnel work day in, day out to
provide safe, efficient and customer-friendly air traffic
services. It's a demanding task, and one that requires
extensive expertise, pronounced flexibility and a strong
commitment to the task. Skyguide manages and monitors
the civil and military air traffic in Swiss airspace
at Zurich, Geneva, Berne and Lugano and military airports
and in the sectors of adjoining non-Swiss airspace it
has been assigned. It is currently extending these managing
and monitoring duties to the country's military airfields,
too.
