Transoft
Legacy Liberator to move MWS Wire’s critical supply chain
applications off legacy HPe3000
17
January 2006 - Transoft, a leader in helping
companies evolve their existing legacy applications, has been
chosen by one of the world’s leading providers of copper and
specialty wire, MWS Wire, to migrate their critical supply
chain, manufacturing processing and accounting applications
off the HPe3000 legacy mainframe which is nearing ‘end of
life’. Using
Transoft
Legacy Liberator, MWS Wire will migrate their
applications to Microsoft Windows using Micro Focus COBOL and
Microsoft SQL Server for the database,
putting all its systems into a modern platform much
faster and with less business risk than re-writing the code or
replacing it with packaged software.
Tomm Carlson, IT
Manager at MWS Wire spent some time considering his options
when HP first advised it would be de-commissioning the
HPe3000. He said, "We had too many lines of code to
re-write our applications – it would have taken too long,
cost us too much and would have been a huge risk for the
business. We did look at other software packages but we
didn’t want to lose the years of business logic and
enhancements we’d made to the applications that are the
basis of our business. We needed to maintain the stability
we’d enjoyed in our IT environment for so many years."
Transoft Legacy
Liberator migration tools provide a proven way to move HP
e3000 MPE applications to the Windows platform. In the case of
MWS Wire, Transoft Legacy Liberator is being used to move their
VPLUS
screens to VB.net and the Image database to SQL Server.
Tomm Carlson
commented: "Although we have limited resources we
didn’t want to completely outsource this project because we
have a very particular environment and wanted to maintain
control. Moreover, we felt the knowledge we’d gain by going
through the migration process would put us in a much stronger
position to manage the new environment. The mix of outside
expertise and insider knowledge was the best solution."
Paul Holland at
Transoft, commented, "The migration of the MWS Wire
mission critical business applications to Windows means that
it has one common modern computing environment for all of its
IT functions. Their migration is, therefore, a strategic step
ensuring IT continues to meet the needs of the business, a
decision driver that is well beyond how long the HPe3000 will
continue to be supported".
Transoft is a
migration expert, moving mission critical applications off a
wide variety of hardware platforms including HP e3000, DEC
VAX, Unisys IX and NX, NCR VRX, ICL VME, IBM MVS, Data General
MV and Bull GCOS to Unix, Linux and Windows open platforms.
Its automated migration process delivers a cost-effective and
low risk alternative to replacing or redeveloping
applications.
"Transoft is
the leader in providing migration tools and services. Having
spoken to other customers who have used them, I’m confident
about their knowledge and the ability of their tools to
migrate our business critical applications into a new
environment," Tomm Carlson concluded.
