Transoft announces Business Rules Mining solution to help companies improve agility

20 October 2003 – Orlando FL, Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, Transoft, a leader in enabling companies to evolve new solutions from existing applications, announced today at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, its new solution for mining business rules from large mainframe COBOL applications.

The Transoft solution uses a methodology based on a Business Rules Mining (BRM) extension to the proven Transoft evolveIT application understanding toolset. The evolveIT/BRM add-on module provides an easy to use, automated, step-by-step approach to the usually complex task of identifying business logic buried deep in large COBOL applications. Transoft evolveIT is used by blue-chip companies worldwide, including New Zealand Inland Revenue, Capital One and Barclays Bank.

Using, as a foundation, the extensive application understanding capabilities already provided in the core Transoft evolveIT product, the Transoft evolveIT/BRM module allows an application to be partitioned into specific business process related views, within which business rule sites, and then the business rules, are identified. Transoft evolveIT/BRM consolidates the rules into a single repository, from which they can be made available in a variety of re-usable formats, including XML documents for export into rules engines or application modeling tools.

"Many organizations are beginning to realize the potential benefits of identifying the business rules buried in their legacy systems", commented Dale Vecchio, a senior Gartner analyst, who is an expert on legacy application modernization trends. Vecchio added, "by mining out the existing core logic that controls the behavior of a business and making this information available to both technical and non-technical user communities, companies can become more agile, implementing new business processes faster, while understanding existing processes more thoroughly".

“Mining business rules from large applications which have been developed and used for decades is an extremely complex job and virtually impossible to do manually”, said John Pocock, Transoft BRM principal architect. He continued, “There have been several ‘silver bullet’ solutions brought to the market in recent years that promised to automatically find every business rule in your application, but we see little evidence of success and are frankly skeptical about their applicability to real world projects. The beauty of our solution is that it leverages the user's knowledge and skills with the productivity benefits of a tools-based approach and a pragmatic methodology which has been proved to deliver tangible results”.
