Transoft acquires
tools to help over 400,000 legacy VMS and OpenVMS users worldwide
migrate to UNIX and Windows
ATLANTA, August 3, 2004 - Transoft, a leader in enabling
companies to evolve new solutions from existing applications,
announced today its acquisition of the proven VMS
and OpenVMS application migration toolset from Accelr8
Technology Corporation of Denver, Colo.
IT research firm Gartner, Inc. estimates there are still
more than 400,000 VMS and OpenVMS mainframe installations
worldwide. Originally developed by Digital Equipment Corporation
(DEC), these platforms are now owned by Hewlett-Packard (HP).
Many of these users are looking to move their applications
onto new operating systems. Transoft's own research of the
US market indicates that approximately 30 percent of all current
VMS and OpenVMS sites are looking to move off these operating
systems within the next three years.
For more than 15 years, the Accelr8 migration toolset has
provided an established solution to this problem and given
users a choice of migrating their applications to UNIX and
Microsoft Windows operating systems. In addition to acquiring
the migration toolset, Transoft will take on the existing
software maintenance and support contracts of the Accelr8
products.
Paul Holland, Transoft's chief executive officer, said, "Transoft
is recognized as one of the leading providers of application
migration and modernization solutions. Our acquisition of
the Accelr8 migration tools allows us to bring our proven
solutions and methodologies to the VMS and OpenVMS user communities
around the world. Over the next five to ten years we believe
this is going to be the largest active application migration
market with a potential value of over $8 billion."
Transoft's immediate task is to incorporate the Accelr8 migration
tools into the Transoft Legacy Liberator suite of migration
technologies. "The Accelr8 tools already provide a complete
migration solution for any VMS or OpenVMS user," continued
Holland. "They handle the migration of data, application
code, screens and DCL job scripts. However, we are examining
how we can integrate our other proven Transoft technologies
to provide the VMS and OpenVMS users with a complete application
migration, modernization and integration solution. Our goal
is to provide the same 'don't just move - improve' application
modernization benefits to the users of the old DEC operating
systems as we do for the HP e3000, Data General, Bull and
other legacy platform users."
Transoft has also signed a distributor agreement with CIM-Team
Technische Informatik GmbH, a German company that provides
the complementary Open FMS tools, which emulate on UNIX or
Windows the FMS screen I/O manager used by VMS and OpenVMS.
VMS and OpenVMS are now trademarks of HP.
