Transoft Helps City of Las Vegas to Manage Its Technology Applications

ATLANTA, December 4, 2003 - Transoft, a leader in enabling companies to evolve new solutions from existing applications, announced today the successful implementation of its Transoft evolveIT application understanding tool in the City of Las Vegas, Nev., aimed at more productively managing and maintaining its legacy COBOL programs.

"We are transitioning from a mainframe environment to an n-tier web and PC desktop environment. Since most of those COBOL programs were created 10 to 20 years ago, whenever we received requests to modify our existing mainframe applications, some of the in-house expertise has retired and we have limited capability to quickly understand the impact of those changes," said Brent Merkley, IT Development Supervisor for Las Vegas. "We were unable to maintain previous service levels with the documentation available for our COBOL applications. The City needed another tool to gain a better understanding of our complete applications portfolio, and evolveIT helped us do precisely that."

Transoft evolveIT eliminates the need for the Las Vegas IT team to rely on the knowledge of key developers and manual processes to maintain the City's mainframe applications, as well as to depend on "home-grown" programs designed to handle them. This feature, in effect, enables the user to visually examine the links and dependencies between COBOL code and asset elements that are contained within the repository. "In Las Vegas, Transoft evolveIT's control structure diagrams enabled the City's IT professionals to rapidly understand their program structure, the processes involved and the names of the routines within the process," said Steve Ross, Principal Consultant at Transoft.
