Transoft Moves
the Technology at Lakeshore Learning Materials from the '80s
to the 21st Century
ATLANTA, April 6, 2004 - Transoft, a leader
in enabling companies to evolve new solutions from existing
applications, announced an agreement with Lakeshore
Learning Materials to migrate and update the applications
and data of the company's order processing system to an open-system
architecture.
Based in the Los Angeles area, Lakeshore Learning
produces and sells school supplies and educational toys. After
more than 20 years of using an order processing system on
a Data
General (DG) MV system, and given the dwindling support
available for it, Lakeshore Learning decided to update the
system to today's open-system standards.
The company has been a longtime user of Transoft's technologies,
namely the company's B32 programming language. For this project,
Transoft offered its U/BL
programming environment to replace the B32-based applications
and migrate them onto HP-UX. Simultaneously, Transoft plans
to move Lakeshore Learning's data from the DG MV system's
INFOS structure to its own U/FOS database management system.
Over time, Lakeshore Learning's order processing system will
run on a Hewlett-Packard server using the open-system HP-UX
environment.
"Our message to companies like Lakeshore Learning is
'don't just move - improve,' said Paul Holland, CEO of Transoft.
"This means that we go beyond a migration by giving customers
the option to move their applications into new technologies
- moreover, they can be transitioned without risk and at a
fraction of the cost of redeveloping them."
The migration
process is expected to conclude in the summer of 2004.
"Transoft has delivered everything it has promised,"
said Irl Cramer, Vice President of Lakeshore Learning. "We
are thrilled with this cost-effective technology proposition,
which will give us cutting-edge systems and plenty of room
to grow and serve schools, teachers and students for many
years to come."
