Department
for International Development
A more flexible environment, but with as little
change as possible.
"We now have a much more
flexible platform…but our users can still utilize
the system in the ways they've grown accustomed to."
With offices in London and Glasgow, the Department for
International Development is the government agency responsible
for managing the £2 billion fund to develop some
of the poorest nations of the world. Like many organizations
worldwide, the Department for International Development
has faced the challenge of evolving IT systems that are
rapidly approaching the end of their lifecycle - the systems
are expensive to maintain, yet the information they contain
is essential.
The Department decided to move to open systems, but preserve
the user elements of the system as much as possible. Transoft
was asked to migrate AOS/VS COBOL to Micro Focus COBOL
and the DG/SQL database to Oracle running on an HP9000
machine.
