Cashco selects Transoft for OpenVMS application migration

Cashco, a leading manufacturer of control valves based in Ellsworth USA, has chosen Transoft, the modernization experts, to migrate its business critical legacy applications from OpenVMS to a Linux operating system. The application is currently written in FORTRAN using an Oracle database, and will be converted to C continuing to use an Oracle database.

As their business continues to expand Cashco realized they needed to move their FORTRAN application to a more sustainable technology stack. Cashco had spent years developing and modifying their FORTRAN application to meet their business needs. It is important to Cashco to maintain that investment. They are also finding it hard to recruit new employees with the necessary skills to support their existing technology stack.

Cashco’s partner Oracle recommended Transoft to conduct the application and code migration - Cashco had originally considered employing staff to rewrite the code themselves, but deemed the threat to the business logic to be too imposing. They also knew that a code rewrite would impose an unacceptable amount of testing time on their IT staff.

Cashco reviewed their options, and selected Transoft. This was based on Transoft’s track record of successfully migrating applications off the OpenVMS platform, the expertise and methodology which ensures any changes to the application are efficient, accurate and traceable, and Transoft’s proven migration products.

Transoft will be delivering Packet 1 of 3 next month, and the migration is scheduled to be completed by November 2012. The business-critical code will be migrated in sections to allow Cashco’s IT staff to test it in stages – thereby reducing the strain on their resources towards the end of the project, and improving time to market.
